Eight hundred years ago, imagery was one of the most commonly used assets of the Church in worship. Serving a congregation of mostly illiterate worshipers meant that the "worship leader" had the heavy responsibility of commissioning art and imagery that would teach without words about the grand luminosity of a GOD who was also as close as our next breath. Even in our literate age, we find that words still fail to communicate the "bigness" of themes and ideas in the same way that an image or a sy… Continue

(I posted this on my blog but wanted to share here too)
On Saturday (Dec. 5th) at 4:58pm Stephen Proctor a.k.a. @worshipvj dropped this tweet: attn media peeps: which would best describe yourself? a lot of science with a littler art - or - a lot of art with a little science? My initial response to Stephen was “honestly think i’m about half science half art rt now & lk it. i was science bf i was art, but gain a better balance everyday”
That question has been pestering me since Saturday. To… Continue
Member Mondays is back with Katie Strandlund. Here it goes:
1. What do you do?
That's a hard question, and one that makes me laugh. In my church I don't counsel people, don't play or sing music, and don't write sermons. But, I do just about everything else. My passion by far is the visual aspect of worship. Someday I'll get to focus solely on that, right?:) At the end of the day my mission in all of it is to get behind the cross and allow God to use me as a tool for… Continue
Heard about Deidox a few months ago. The production team not only shoots some artistic film but also tells one compelling story (or 5 as the case may be now). What angles, techniques, sequences from the Deidox videos could you use to make the stories you tell at your church more compelling? Here's a little information on the story behind Deidox (and below is their first film)
We've been having some problems with jittery video playback in ProPresenter. It's really apparent with looping backgrounds that will skip a few frames when looping back to the beginning of the video. After doing some research on the Renewed Vision forums and talking with our video guys, I've found a solution.
Movie clips have long been an accepted part of the worship service in our culture. Even Textweek.com, a highly liturgical/traditional congregation resource site has a list of movies that support the lectionary readings for Sunday. I think that movie clips can be an important part of our worship times, but I do wonder if it's time to re-evaluate how and where and why we use movie clips during our worship gatherings.
We are in the habit of evaluating pieces to see if they support the mus… Continue

Here are three apps you should consider adding to your iPhone collection (or your iTouch collection if you hate AT&T or just don't have that kind of money to spend on a phone). Hitchcock
Just found out about this one from Alex Schwindt, one of the video producers at Resurrection. For all of you who suck at drawing storyboards (or maybe skip the preproduction process all together) here is s… Continue

Most churches are addicted to text. Even when we have projectors capable of showing images or videos we still use them mainly to project text: song lyrics, scripture passages, sermon notes.
A few weeks ago I shared some ideas for making sermon notes more visually pleasing and maybe even artistic. Today I wanted to share an idea for making your scripture verses more about the visual and less about… Continue
It's Thursday and I know some of you could use a little pick-me-up to help get you through weekend preparations. Here are some videos that will inspire you, make you think or just make you laugh (not in any particular order, results not typical, no guarantees):
ProPresenter is a solid piece of presentation software (which is what would would expect from a Mac-based product made by some guys who did production with Passion, Catalyst and North Point). There have been a few things holding me back from becoming an all out fan of Pro Presenter though.
Not being able to more precisely control the placement of text or graphics on the screen is a pain in the butt. The global shadow, outline and transition speed options were annoying and made things… Continue
We had a fun and powerful weekend at Church of the Resurrection wrapping up the last part of our Gospel In Film series. The contemporary venue team that I work with produced all the worship services in the main sanctuary (we usually only do Saturday and Sunday evenings with traditional services on Sunday morning).
The movie for the weekend was Field of Dreams and we were focusing on listening to God's voice and his call on our lives with our new downtown campus pastor preaching. The most e… Continue
When people say they are leaving room for the Holy Spirit, more often than not, in reality they are just winging it and hanging on for dear life spending all of their time thinking about what's next, distracted by the confusion and chaos of little planning. You can plan worship and craft moments and still leave room for the Holy Spirit - because when you have things planned, when you've rehearsed things out, you can forget about what's coming next, if thing are going to go well and just be in th… Continue

There are so many songs out there to choose from it can sometimes be overwhelming to find the right one that will help drive home the point of the service. We want the CWT to be a place where you can share your ideas and be inspired by the ideas of others and since we can't all be creative geniuses every week, why not borrow from other people's creativity?
To help with this goal, we are starting two new monthly conversations:
So why is it every time I watch Extreme Makeover: Home Edition I cry? These aren't like the tears of pain I get as I'm gouging my eyes out while watching most other reality shows. On the contrary, these are the good kind of tears. If you've never seen the show, handyman Ty Pennington and his crew go around the country helping to makeover the run down houses of some very deserving people.
A recent show featured Bernard McFarland who returned to his violence ridden hometown after servin… Continue
Check out this interview that friend of the tour, Stephen Proctor, did with an American guy working over in China. He has some great perspective on the Chinese church and visual worship. (watch the full version here and read Stephen's blog post here)
Here's another clip from my video chat with Camron Ware and Stephen Proctor. About half way through our conversation they pulled out this old book published in 1949. The book is basically a media ministry handbook of back in the day. Take a listen to some of the great points the book makes:
Gomediazine.com is a great resource for tutorials, freebies and advice from working artists and designers.
Last week I came across this set of articles they have posted with the Rules of Becoming A Master Designer. It's always good to be reminded of the basics so check out the summary below or click the links to read the articles in their entirety.
The video library at CWT.com is one of my favorite parts of the site. Where else can you go to hear bite-sized bits of wisdom from different leaders from around the country? (Did I mention it's free?)
Everyone should go watch a video or two or twelve. We've got them on all aspects of creative worship: planning,… Continue

Linda,
I think I have deleted a comment of yours by mistake!! My apologies. You can do what Stephen does. Talk to him about what is needed, or trawl around on his website. I think environmental projections would go great at a RED event. Its an easy…
Nice stuff Cyndi. I like the thinking you have done around what you do, before you do it! Not enough people make that kind of close contextualisation to their congregation. Nice.
Thanks, again, to Eric Herron for his "Show and Tell" post! Glad I could be a "guinea pig" for this new way to connect with others on the site. Anyway, I mentioned that I created a PowerPoint presentation to go with the Genesis 1 creation story. It…
This makes me think about what my high school jazz teacher said: "It is the silence between the notes that creates the rhythm."
Saying this was one of the ways he motivated antsy, immature, 16 yr. old jazz musicians to stop playing so many notes wh…
