What is "Visual Worship"?

As my journey continues & I'm having more and more conversations about all-things-tech/church/culture/worship/etc...i have had a growing burden to gain a clearer understanding of what true, biblical worship is. i have much to learn and more scripture to dig into than i can comprehend, but here's so… Continue

DO NOT USE VISUAL MEDIA...

...IF your reasons include the following:

- as a substitute for other methods (think about all the senses)
- solely for entertainment (understand that entertainment is not bad itself and CAN be used as a tool when the timing/context is right)
- a crowd-getter or a cure-all
- a substitute for preparation
- for the personal satisfaction of the visual enthusiast
- to keep the “young people” interested in worship.
- “it’s time to boost our congregational singing.”
- to change with the cultur… Continue

Hi Stephen, Just found this web-site. I havebarely met any other worship VJ's, so am interested in getting in touch. I'm in Bristol UK. I've done VJing mainly with bands and DJ's, but have introduced the ideas partly to my normal church services. Always interested in hearing about other peoples passions and ideas.

Thanks for the comment on the "Confessions." And yes, I know Shelly & Nate. Shelly was one of my interns when I was a youth pastor. Known her for years and she is good friends with my wife. I was working production out of town the weekend of their wedding. Same with Mandy & Drew, we were in each others weddings and all that good stuff. Small world.

I told Nate I wanted to come work behind the scenes with you guys some time. Hit me up.

Scientific studies have shown that our memory retains more from visual than auditory stimuli, yet ironically, as a church we seem to focus more on auditory worship, not just in the services but in our church and community as well. The studies also s…

hey Eric- Here's what your options are. preface: in this, i won't count your main laptop LCD display as a "screen", only secondary displays that you are using to display visuals. MATROX OPTIONS: re: DualHead2Go - if you only need to use 2-screens (…

Linda, that's the most interesting thing i've heard in a while... the fact that in some professions, you are trained NOT to ask "why". i'm gonna have to think about that one for a while....not sure how that's going to sit with this rebel. ;) I want…

"...can we create and execute expressions of visual worship in such a way that they clearly, without question, communicate declaration not decoration? In a way that no one can miss it?" ----- ok, well, let's replace "visual worship" with "art"....…
November 27, 2009
great post, Katie! definitely something to keep in mind as many people express themselves differently. so i am still processing this whole "declaration not decoration" phrase.... so i'll ask, what do you think they were "declaring" through their ar…

Good stuff to think about in the posts so far. Thanks for stimulating my thinking. I think its easy for us to confuse a particular definition ie visual worship, with the general one ie worship. The two don't have to fit together although they should…
November 18, 2009
I'm not going to pretend to know what the definition is, but one thing I think visual worship can do is teach people. They could learn to appreciate God's creation more and to know that he is present in something beautiful. That could then inspire t…

I'll add this excerpt from what I posted over at www.worshipvj.com to the conversation here.... On to the question of visual worship. I would define visual worship as an attempt to reflect what God has revealed of himself to the world. We attempt t…

November 16, 2009
I think your first sentence nails it, worship is a response and it comes out of the whole arc of God's story. So visual worship is declaration, not decoration. It isn't decorating a product for attracting, it's the declaration of a people for remem…

Nice stuff Cyndi. I like the thinking you have done around what you do, before you do it! Not enough people make that kind of close contextualisation to their congregation. Nice.
