Green Season photos

An artist in my congregation executed the seasonal environment you see in my photos, below. I know it's not as exciting as a video, but I just really like the way it looks. The cutout windows behind our altar look out onto a busy city street, inviting the world in and reminding us of the neighborhood beyond our walls. Actually, the west wall of our worship space is floor-to-ceiling windows looking out on the busiest bus line in the city. Transparency and hospitality. Yeah, it's a friendly space.

Quotes from Day 1

I saw and heard many, many things to ponder today. Here are a few quotes in particular that I've been thinking about.
From Brian McLaren in the afternoon session: "The church is not the end user of the gospel." To set this statement in a bit more context, McLaren was challenging the notion that the church's purpose is to improve the church. The church, he said, exists to make the world better.
From Nancy Beach, quoting someone else (don't remember who): "We are planning worship too much from mem… Continue

Willow Creek Day 1

Wow! This is my first visit to Willow Creek and I've been completely blown away. The facility is beautiful, the hospitality has been wonderful, and everything is done with intention and excellence. I learned some new songs, saw some great uses of video in worship, and got to hear from the guy who started Cirque du Soleil! Based on what I saw and heard today, this Lutheran could totally enjoy getting to know the Evangelical cousins.

I just now checked out Tim's video. What a wonderful collection! I know that nursing facility, too. Former Concordia-Milwaukee prof and father of John Gienapp, Prof John Henry Gienapp, was a resident at St Matthew's
home for the last couple years of his life. I actually had a chance to visit with Prof Gienapp at that facility. I'll have to make sure that Mom sees this video, too. Maybe we could take Sophia out there to see the display.

How I wish that these kinds of resources had been so readily available when I was first starting in parish ministry. I had to rely on once-a-year Institutes at Valpo to challenge my creativity. But I'm glad I had those Institutes--and was eventually able to share them with you.

Hey Suzanne! Thanks for your comment on my video- sorry, I had to delete the whole post because of some tech probs...so your comment was also deleted :(

But- I would LOVE to discuss it further, get feedback etc
I can really relate too with what you're saying about being unable to see many other churches approach to creativity- it is one of the reasons I'm so excited for this group!
and thanks again!

Looking forward to it. By the way, did you get my email about Sundays and Seasons? I'm not sure I sent you my contract stuff in the midst of the move. Let me know.

That being said, this looks like fun.

Suzanne,

...and thanks to you all for some really great food and conversation. I think we as a team really had a great time. We also made it home safe and sound...after about 2 1/2 hours of detours to avoid a washed-out interstate.

Linda, I think I have deleted a comment of yours by mistake!! My apologies. You can do what Stephen does. Talk to him about what is needed, or trawl around on his website. I think environmental projections would go great at a RED event. Its an easy…

Nice stuff Cyndi. I like the thinking you have done around what you do, before you do it! Not enough people make that kind of close contextualisation to their congregation. Nice.

Thanks, again, to Eric Herron for his "Show and Tell" post! Glad I could be a "guinea pig" for this new way to connect with others on the site. Anyway, I mentioned that I created a PowerPoint presentation to go with the Genesis 1 creation story. It…

This makes me think about what my high school jazz teacher said: "It is the silence between the notes that creates the rhythm." Saying this was one of the ways he motivated antsy, immature, 16 yr. old jazz musicians to stop playing so many notes wh…
