You had me at "Dumbledore." ;-) Seriously, thanks for such GREAT insight and provocative, insightful words. I think you open up a huge can of worms about what a free market does to church leadership. We need to think through what differences there a…

Hi Chad, I think we probably have different perspectives on this, and that's okay with me. Where I'm coming from is this: as the Church, we proclaim the Lordship of Jesus over all people and all nations. "Jesus is Lord" for early Christians meant…

Chad, Not to kill your creative buzz here, my response to all of these ideas is to ask, "where is the worship of God in these things?"

Jodi, I hope by my comments and posts here you know that I am in your corner, very much. Out of that context, hear my echo Bill's concerns. Mission is what God saves us for, and too often, I think, the implicit message of our worship is that God sav…

Jodi, This is a subject that is important to me, but that I have a very hard time sorting this out. It has very practical implications for me: At my church I lead worship (on occasion), but I am also currently leading a mission team to Haiti in Jun…

A title? I kind of started off--if you read Part 1--with "What's worth dying for?" But as you see, where I ended up only touched on that question as an introduction. Maybe "Lay your burdens down" would have been better. The problem was that I didn't…

Excellent stuff Nate. A solid process that led to a great worship event. You can't do better than that. I liked your stations content a lot. Strong connection to the story and bridging into people's realities. Very nice. I think you are so right to…

Good Friday Recap, Part 2: The Gathering

This is a description of our Good Friday Service. For background about the context, concept and process, see Part 1.

I set up the room differently, as sketched below. The normal setup is on the left, with the band spread across the stage in front. Besides having a communion table, I also set up four stations for the small-group… Continue

Walking through a creative process - Advent 2009, Part 3

(I began this post on Saturday, but didn't get it finished.)

Most of this past week was a difficult one for me, creatively and spiritually. I had introduced three different activities to my church that I hoped would allow us to walk through the journey of Advent together, but I had doubts about how well those things worked (see Part 1) and… Continue

Walking through a creative process - Advent 2009, Part 2

Today's service was the first part of my attempt to pull something together for my church community to celebrate Advent together. In my last post, I had been pondering two questions:

If advent is about preparation, how do you prepare for a surprise?
If advent is about waiting, how do you wait for the unexpected?

As I thought more about what my own church community is like, I thought that what I really wanted to bring to them was not merely an experience on Sunday, but the experience and practi… Continue

Walking through a creative process - Advent 2009, Part 1

As a kind of experiment, I'm going to try to blog about what I'm putting together for advent. This is going to be a kind of stream-of-consciousness, a documentary, rather than an analysis. At my congregation, for various reasons, we are rather improvisatory (and a bit last-minute), so I just got the go-ahead from my pastor to contribute to something that would help us observe advent.

He intends to focus this December on how the coming of Jesus upsets our expectations of how God comes, that God'… Continue

Hey Nate,
I checked out your blog and then New Music for Old Hymns. The RUF Hymnbook is pretty cool. I'm looking for a few ways to use some of the oldies. Thanks - I was not aware of it before.

Linda, I think I have deleted a comment of yours by mistake!! My apologies. You can do what Stephen does. Talk to him about what is needed, or trawl around on his website. I think environmental projections would go great at a RED event. Its an easy…

Nice stuff Cyndi. I like the thinking you have done around what you do, before you do it! Not enough people make that kind of close contextualisation to their congregation. Nice.

Thanks, again, to Eric Herron for his "Show and Tell" post! Glad I could be a "guinea pig" for this new way to connect with others on the site. Anyway, I mentioned that I created a PowerPoint presentation to go with the Genesis 1 creation story. It…

This makes me think about what my high school jazz teacher said: "It is the silence between the notes that creates the rhythm." Saying this was one of the ways he motivated antsy, immature, 16 yr. old jazz musicians to stop playing so many notes wh…
