For the last 9 years I've been an associate pastor at Lutheran Church of Hope in Des Moines, IA. We're a large church geared for people who hate church-as-usual. My areas of responsibility are worship and prayer.
We're one of those churches that has band-driven worship; most of our members attend those services. We also have a traditional service that's supported by choir, brass, orchestra, and handbells--although not all at once. I'm the principal organist for that service. I oversee a team that plans and leads the band-driven services.
I also do a lot of teaching at our church. I'm a total Bible-junkie and love helping people get into the Bible for themselves.
Before coming to Des Moines I worked with a resource group for our denomination (the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America) helping congregations to be more welcoming and engaging to people who didn't go to church. I still do consulting now and then for churches in the area.

This makes me think about what my high school jazz teacher said: "It is the silence between the notes that creates the rhythm."
Saying this was one of the ways he motivated antsy, immature, 16 yr. old jazz musicians to stop playing so many notes wh…
