Previous post included a phrase that should have read "all exactly equal BEFORE God" not "equal to God"

The more people talk about something, the less it's usually happening. Lots and lots and lots of talk on here and all over the profession about the music being for God, and never to impress or get off on. I don't believe it, it is simply not reflect…

I'm more interested in what others have to say at this point, but I'll respond to Linda briefly (and thanks for the comment). The only thing keeping me working right now is a vision of neighborhood ministry. I alluded to this before, but I think one…

Ahhh, now here is good conversation. I was getting bored with the hoity toity business of church culture being tossed around on CWT. Enough other forums around for the same-o same-o. I like the challenge of this kind of honesty. I think the questio…

I guess I feel a little uncomfortable in this profession. I came to it late, I didn't grow up in a church. I lived the punk rock life for a long time, and often feel like an embarassing problem to people even as they tell me they are glad I'm there.…

Of course you can, and of course I was being ornery to make a point. But I ask you this: can you truly say that the profession has not been compromised and corrupted by commodifcation and celebrity culture and the profit motive? Can worship leaders…

Why one or the other? Can't you do both?

I think I am going to take my acoustic guitar (or maybe my reverend electric and a battery powered amp) and go set up on the pedestrian mall in town and sing songs about Jesus, because I have the funny feeling that it will accomplish more in a few d…

Distorted guitars and liturgy... why can't we have both?

Hello to whoever reads these things :o). I'm the music leader at a midsize-ish Lutheran church in Charlottesville VA. We have a hymn and organ service and a band-led service. The "traditional" service makes use of the entire ELW liturgy. The "contemporary" service makes use of liturgical elements, and is liturgical in flow, but does not use all the text elements of a traditional service.

I've been experiencing more and more of the variety that's out there, and this site has been helpful in expa… Continue

Hi Ken:
At present we have one traditional liturgy. As a developing congregation this meets the current needs of out community. We are starting a prayer service once a month on Saturdays in the near future. This will likely draw on both the traditional and contemporary prayer styles in the Church. I can tell you more as we develop it.
Hope you can visit us some time. You are always welcome.
Peace:
Tim Manley

Wow, Tom. That was very poignant. Some of your thoughts remind me of that movie "Pay It Forward". I also think about local church models: large vs. small. Typically, the larger church attempts to make a big splash and impact many at once. This is u…

I think it is much easier to pray for or want peace on a global or macro level and much harder to look into the mirror and pray and ask for peace in our own hearts. When we find peace with God we become a beacon of peace to our children, wife, husba…

I was sitting at my table, eating my breakfast cereal and minding my own business when WHAM! An overwhelming peace came over me. I don't think it was from God - it wasn't that good - and yet the calm that I experienced was tangible. And, the usual…

Traditionally we had the sermon as central. Singing and scripture was around that with singing a very important part. Now I am not sure- performance?? We had many praise bands, and many different songs that get played. Do we sing. Not really. Not su…
