This makes me think about what my high school jazz teacher said: "It is the silence between the notes that creates the rhythm." Saying this was one of the ways he motivated antsy, immature, 16 yr. old jazz musicians to stop playing so many notes wh…

Hey ladies: thanks for the comments and input. For the record, I LOVE singing bowls. They are powerful, purposeful and incredibly useful. In fact, all of the tips mentioned above directed at musicians are meant to imitate a singing bowl. You are rig…

Thanks, Jodi, for the excellent thoughts, as usual. This reminded me of a recent phone conversation with Ted Lyddon Hatten, director of Wesley Foundation at Drake University in Iowa. (Did you meet Ted at The Art of Curating Worship event? Mark Piers…

keeping it short...and quiet: I've experience three plus a "series" of quiet corporate worships-- North Point 7:22 (collegiate Louis Giglio's group) 5,000 people in total silence for over 2 hours. No music. I traveled two hours from Chattanooga, no…

Thanks for this Jodi. I am working on a Lament Collection for Clayfire and bits of your post have sparked some good emotions and ideas. Peace!

Jodi, Your statement of worship to consistently and more authentically be more Job than David got me tonight. The mystery of God being acknowledged instead of trying to figure everything out! God is never is the boxes I sometimes put him in. Thanks

Profile Information

The name of your church / organization?
Pastor at Ecclesia Denver; Creative Facilitator with Stained Glass Project
How are you involved in worship?
Visual Worship, Musical Worship, Worship Design
An aspect of creative worship you are passionate about?
New revelations about God seem to break through the sub-cultural categories when we participate in creative, out-of-the-box worship. I'm pro-art, pro-expression, pro-participation. This is what thrills me and is inevitably the foundation of many worship conversations.
A challenge when planning creative worship?
We get in the way of ourselves and of each other too often. AND our expectations have been so firmly planted and watered by the streams of worship culture instead of the rich heritage of our faith and the profound statements of artists.
A favorite creative moment in worship?
There are so many with so many different textures and contexts, I don't know if I could list one.
A favorite quote or scripture about creative worship:
The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead; his eyes are closed. - Albert Einstein

The Sound of Silence

Hello, darkness, my old friend / I've come to talk with you again / because a vision softly creeping / left it's seeds while I was sleeping / and the vision that was planted in my brain / still remains / within the sound of silence.

Very few poet-songwriters of the 1970's could paint word pictures like Simon and Garfunkel. I'm still not sure if I can find one that feels more true and tangible than the idea of the "sound of silence." Immediately,… Continue

Why We Need a Scary Worship Philosophy

Scary confession: I don’t really like going to church. Even my church - you know, that one that I pastor. I wake up on Sunday mornings at that ol’ 5:30 am rooster crow and have to wind myself up for the morning ahead with a small ball of something in my stomach resembling weariness and an “i-don’t-wanna” attitude. Don’t get me wrong...I’m always so glad, so ridiculously grateful once I get there and things start moving; once the liturgy starts rolling off our tongues, the music takes that myster… Continue

New Pictures for an Old Story

[This is a re-post from a blog posted in September 2008. After spending this last week with so many great people discussing worship as narrative, this seemed like another appropriate piece to add to the conversation. Can't wait to hear your thoughts!]

It is Thursday, and I am heading down to the inner-city middle school my
daughter attends to direct and nurture a fledgling after-school choir program. You know the story. No funding means no art and music. Then what follows: academic achi… Continue

Professor Dumbledore and the Golden Calf: thoughts for worship

I think I need an Albus Dumbledore. You know what I mean: a dignified, velvet-dressed wizard to speak epiphanies into being and the occasional incredibly random statement from time to time, just to keep me on track and at peace with myself. I'm pretty sure they don't sell those at Sharper Image, but if they did I'd be lining up. This wisdom from the great Professor is one of the most oft-referenced sharpie scrawled post-it-notes clinging to the front of my idea journal..."The time is yet coming… Continue

Mood-Makers, Story-Tellers, and Picture-Framers

Eight hundred years ago, imagery was one of the most commonly used assets of the Church in worship. Serving a congregation of mostly illiterate worshipers meant that the "worship leader" had the heavy responsibility of commissioning art and imagery that would teach without words about the grand luminosity of a GOD who was also as close as our next breath. Even in our literate age, we find that words still fail to communicate the "bigness" of themes and ideas in the same way that an image or a sy… Continue

Jodi,

I've been reading over your blog posts, and I wanted to tell you that what you express is deeply resonant for me. As much as we can become enamored with artistic ingenuity, I appreciate how you point us to grounding our creativity in the Story of God, how you explore the theological foundations or worship and creativity. Keep up the good work.

Jodi, Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I find myself still wondering what authentic worship is, even after serving for over thirty years. Your discussion is very helpful.
I have a story on my page with some music I would like to share with you. Check it out when you have an opportunity.

Nice stuff Cyndi. I like the thinking you have done around what you do, before you do it! Not enough people make that kind of close contextualisation to their congregation. Nice.
