Creative Worship Tour

Our church is holding its first class in it's new theological school. The school is hoping to cater to people that are professionals. Thus, we are hoping to video the classes so that students, who are unable to attend the evening courses, can view the DVD.

Does anyone have suggestions for a good "TV" quality camera to use for this purpose? I'm currently looking at a Canon GL2.

In the near future I'd like to utilize this same camera in our auditorium so it can stream to an overflow room in the back of our building.

Thanks for the help.

I've only used a GL2 a few times but here are some things to consider.

The most important thing is audio. I'm guessing you're wanting to use a lapel for the professor and maybe a room mic to catch class discussion? I don't think the GL2 has an XLR input so you'd have to use an XLR to mini plug adapter which can cause a hum...

Does your classroom / lecture space have stage lighting or is it just fluorescent? I can't really speak to the GL2's performance in low light but a used Sony PD170 or Panasonic DVX100 would work well and both have XLR inputs.

Another thing to consider would be going tapeless. That would bump up the price considerably but capturing those tapes and burning to DVD will take a while. If you're doing it often enough it might be worth it.

What Josh is saying is right - you actually need to consider everything BUT the "camera" when you are choosing a camera:

1) Audio

Not knowing the setup of your classes, I'm going to assume that it's a mostly a teacher in front setup. In that case, the least obtrusive audio would be a wireless mic into an XLR input on a camera. I would definitely get a camera that has XLR.

2) SD vs HD

Most new prosumer cameras shoot HD, which you may or may not need. HD also edits down to better SD footage, but for a classroom setting, SD would be totally sufficient. Unless you want HD - but that will add more needs to your editing setup.

3) Editing Setup

This is where you'll need to answer the most questions. Who will edit the videos? What kind of computer and software do they have? Josh mentions recording on tape vs. recording on a camera hard drive or SD card - this will also affect your editing setup and archiving.

I would actually recommend making web videos of the classes rather than creating DVDs, which will make your life easier. For cameras, I like Panasonic the best, just a personal preference. The cheapest option is the DVX100 - it is the same price or cheaper than the Canon GL2 and has the XLR inputs. Something around $2000 or less if you can find a used one. The best option IMO is the Panasonic HMC150. It shoots HD on SD cards and is a fantastic camera. But camera, cards, bag, extra battery will cost you $3500, so that's a lot. And your video editor will have to be pretty competent.

Good luck with your search. Folks around here will help you along the way.

Nice stuff Cyndi. I like the thinking you have done around what you do, before you do it! Not enough people make that kind of close contextualisation to their congregation. Nice.

This makes me think about what my high school jazz teacher said: "It is the silence between the notes that creates the rhythm." Saying this was one of the ways he motivated antsy, immature, 16 yr. old jazz musicians to stop playing so many notes wh…
