Creative Worship Tour

From Brian McLaren in the Wednesday afternoon session: "The church is not the end user of the gospel." To set this statement in a bit more context, McLaren was challenging the notion that the church's purpose is to improve the church. The church, he said, exists to make the world better.
From Nancy Beach, quoting someone else (don't remember who): "We are planning worship too much from memory and not enough from imagination." Brings up mixed feelings for me, but mostly I like it.
Also from Nancy Beach, on some recent negative blogging about Willow Creek: "If you cut us, we bleed evangelism."

And, as I am sitting in a small workshop being led by Brian McLaren, I was just captivated by the poetry of this statement that he just made in talking about spiritual formation through gathered worship, "Liturgy is organized mystery."

Some favorites from today.
From Mark Batterson, National Community Church in Washington, DC: "Jesus didn't die to make us safe. Jesus died to make us dangerous." Of theologically trained folks (like me), he said, "We're not as adept at exegeting the culture as we are at exegeting the Bible." And one more from Mark: "Your church's website is the front door to your church for a lot of people." Many folks will visit your church on the web before they ever walk through your doors. What kind of first impression are we making?
This quip from Ross Parsley (New Life Christian Church in Colorado Springs) made me laugh out loud: "Every cool church has to surrender to the minivan." He was talking about postmodern, Xer churches. I'm not sure I totally agree, but I love the image!

Gilles Ste Croix, one of the creative forces behind Cirque de Soleil was talking about people's experience with the new Cirque show Love (with music from the Beatles). After experiencing the show, "You heard the Beatles in a new way -- you will never hear it the same way again."

That is a challenge God has for us as creative leaders: to spread his message in new, creative ways, so those who hear will be transformed.

One additional quote I liked from Ross Parsley, when speaking about our efforts to get worship perfect and clean...

"We can't have a sanitized worship service because that doesn't reflect who God really is."

This summer I experienced my first Global Mission Event. At the Sunday Eucharist the preacher, Rev. Rafael Malpica Padilla, said, “The mission of Jesus Christ has a church,” not “The church of Jesus Christ has a mission.”

Linda, I think I have deleted a comment of yours by mistake!! My apologies. You can do what Stephen does. Talk to him about what is needed, or trawl around on his website. I think environmental projections would go great at a RED event. Its an easy…

Nice stuff Cyndi. I like the thinking you have done around what you do, before you do it! Not enough people make that kind of close contextualisation to their congregation. Nice.

Thanks, again, to Eric Herron for his "Show and Tell" post! Glad I could be a "guinea pig" for this new way to connect with others on the site. Anyway, I mentioned that I created a PowerPoint presentation to go with the Genesis 1 creation story. It…

This makes me think about what my high school jazz teacher said: "It is the silence between the notes that creates the rhythm." Saying this was one of the ways he motivated antsy, immature, 16 yr. old jazz musicians to stop playing so many notes wh…
